{"id":210,"date":"2013-05-27T13:06:58","date_gmt":"2013-05-27T13:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hgf-eda.de\/?page_id=210"},"modified":"2017-03-27T08:03:56","modified_gmt":"2017-03-27T08:03:56","slug":"hydrosphere","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hgf-eda.de\/?page_id=210","title":{"rendered":"Hydrosphere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hgf-eda.de\/?attachment_id=1297\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1297\" src=\"http:\/\/hgf-eda.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/hydrosphere_600x450-300x225.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hgf-eda.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/hydrosphere_600x450-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hgf-eda.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/hydrosphere_600x450-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/hgf-eda.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/hydrosphere_600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>The overall technical goal of the <strong>research topic Hydrosphere<\/strong> is to enhance the understanding of hydrological processes by optimally exploiting current (e.g. SMOS, TerrarSAR-X) and planned (e.g. SMAP, Tandem-L) satellite missions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Hydrosphere team is focusing on three <strong>main goals<\/strong> within this research topic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Development and improvement of remote sensing derived information products (e.g. derivation of soil moisture from active and passive microwave sensors)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Validation of remote sensing derived information products (e.g. establishing algorithms for validation and building up ground-measurement infrastructures)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Integration of information products using data assimilation methods and physically based models that will allow a quantitative understanding of dynamic processes in the Hydrosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Scientific questions that will be addressed in this research topic include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Does the assimilation of soil moisture and freeze\/thaw states help to minimize parameter uncertainty of hydrological models?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To what extent does the assimilation of subgrid-scale (e.g. 50-500 m) variability of state variables contribute to the derivation of effective parameters at larger scales (e.g. 1-5 km) in order to characterise hydrological processes?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Does the assimilation of high-resolution synchronised observations of soil moisture and snow water equivalent help to reduce the predictive uncertainty of hydrologic models?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Is Tandem-L with the high spatial resolution of the soil moisture product able to improve the regionalisation of land surface models?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can the global operational GNSS station network contribute to a global soil moisture monitoring and validation system in conjunction with remote sensing products?<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can the improved land surface model enhance our understanding about soil-vegetation \u2013 atmosphere water fluxes and coupled plant water\/carbon \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 dynamics?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hgf-eda.de\/?page_id=430\">Hydrosphere Work Packages<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The overall technical goal of the research topic Hydrosphere is to enhance the understanding of hydrological processes by optimally exploiting current (e.g. SMOS, TerrarSAR-X) and planned (e.g. SMAP, Tandem-L) satellite missions. &nbsp;
